Kaycie Satterfield is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and ironic jazzercise enthusiast who got her start on guitar in a high school Texan swing band. She’s toured with the likes of Madame Gandhi and Thelma and the Sleaze, earning the nickname “Queenie” for her guitar and bass chops. Satterfield's own writing, however, is more man-behind-the-curtain, a mastermind brewing jazz-infused cocktails that are bitingly sweet and take a few licks for the team—both lyrically and in riff-speak. Her upcoming album is out next year and includes craft singles “Putting Me Away” and “Women’s Fiction.” The music bleeds Joni Mitchell and St. Vincent, though she also cites George Benson and Rufus Wainwright as influences. Satterfield currently resides in the cross breeze between Nashville and LA, where she does session work and turns sugar-coated dread into diamond-encrusted pop rocks that flow through the mind and body like the flashing lights of a funhouse.

Like an old dog Barking at a fence Or an old watch Priced at ninety cents Or my leather-bound Bible When heaven and hell stopped making sense You’re putting me away In an old box Filled up to the brim With your old socks You keep because your pockets might be thin Or the china cup you broke But you keep it around ‘cause it was a gift You’re putting me away Out of sight and out of mind and out of earshot, You can find me there Gathering dust and taking space You’re putting me away

Sweet Tooth 02:36
Is it a bad gene? Will it catch up to me later? Will it bring me down to my knees? Is it nurture or nature, baby, I can’t help it when you talk like that Saccharine, You’re like a craving You know I can’t resist you Promises, They’re just like candy You know I got a sweet tooth The way you tease me With the nothings on your red lips Got me jonesin’ for the whole thing But you give it to me sip by sip, It drives me crazy, then you talk like that Saccharine, You’re like a craving You know I can’t resist you Promises, They’re just like candy You know I got a sweet tooth Roses are red, God is dead Let’s get out of this place Sugar, I just want another taste Saccharine, You’re like a craving You know I can’t resist you Promises, They’re just like candy You know I got a sweet tooth

Sarah 02:58
I showed up to the party a little after midnight A little overdressed and tipsy I swear I left my body tangled up in yours On the lower side of New York City I was talking to myself Blending in with the wallpaper Wondering if they could tell I was busy thinking about ya again Again Oh Sarah, I want to do right by you A one-bedroom apartment a little north of Harlem Can only be a home if you make it I could feel your long hair slipping through my fingers Like sand in an hourglass, face it No one’s going to turn back time I probably wouldn’t if I could I just want to get this right Learning every day to treat you like I should I should Oh Sarah I want to do right by you We don’t need a paper from the city hall We don’t need A ring, a house, a fenced-in yard I don’t need to own you like a fancy car Oh Sarah I want to do right by you

Falling 03:24
Never been accused of being fancy-free Easy as a bluebird or a honey bee I’m nervous and I’m doe-eyed So I Filled a little room with all my favorite things Paper Cranes and coffee stains all on my sheets I think I want to show you Won’t you Stay just a little while with me I’m still afraid of the dark and I Some company Darling, I think I might be falling quickly Might have had a bit too much to drink last night Headed out to Paris on a red-eye flight I don’t know why I don’t mind Now I’m Sobering up on an airplane Humming a prelude to all of the pretty times We’ll spend together Darling, I think I might be falling quickly And if Paris is burning tomorrow I’m glad to know that I loved you if only just for a while Darling, I think I might be falling quickly

I want a perfect body I want a million bucks I want someone to want me When I’m down on my luck So I sit in the pews Pray, “God, what do I do with my hands in pictures, How do I use the US Postal System, make me in your image.” So, with one hand in his pocket And one hand in a fist Like a genie in a bottle He grants my every wish And I walk around real proud Just knowing that I’m blessed and highly favored But my sweet neighbor, She never knew the Bible and I’ll never save her It’s such a lovely day With everything in its place They knew, but didn’t tell us Continued selling stocks And the pill they try to sell us Is hard to swallow But I pick out my clothes Just wishing that someone would do it for me So my mom would adore me I’d look like a preacher or a lawyer and no one would ignore me It’s such a lovely day With everything in its place All the birds and the bees and the big jet planes All the runners in this old human race All the flowers you picked in a big glass vase All the parts of you ya tucked away It’s such a lovely day With everything in its place

Funhouse 03:29
Tell me, what’s the use Tell me, what’s the use in trying Someone’s watching you Don’t you find it so exciting I love it when you stare me down There’s a voice in my head telling me that I’d better run away And I try as I might but I come to a sign on the door that says Welcome to the funhouse, baby Saw you dancing through, dancing through the smoke and mirrors Couldn’t differ you from a pixellated picture So I did all my tricks for you There’s a voice in my head telling me that I’d better run away And I try as I might but I come to a sign on the door that says Welcome to the funhouse, baby And I’m reaching out to touch you, but I can’t quite Oh, so I tap twice Welcome to the funhouse, baby

As a woman, I have bloodstains on my clothes from the times I couldn't buy myself a way to stop my bleeding As a woman, I know each freckle on my toes from the times I kept my eyes down hoping nobody could see me And a man in the bar whispers in my ear, he says "I've been talking to God again" And I tell him I smell it on his breath, and he just laughs and says "Let me take you home tonight." I'll keep telling my stories and keep begging someone to listen I'll keep telling my stories, they'll keep calling it women's fiction As a woman I know every detour home from the crossroads to the landmarks to the nearest telephone As a woman I have blood between my teeth from the times I bit my tongue so I didn't yell or scream And the man on the step smokes a cigarette, and says "Where you going in that dress?" And I tell him, to hell with him He just laughs, he just says, my dear "Let me take you home tonight." I'll keep telling my stories and keep begging someone to listen I'll keep telling my stories, they'll keep calling it women's fiction I could write a symphony and make them weep But they're not going to see me, they're not going to hear me so I'll keep telling my stories and keep begging someone to listen I'll keep telling my stories, they'll keep calling it women's fiction
